Coral Gables Perspective - Part Eight

Historic Coral Gables A Self-Guided Tour

In 1986 the Junior League of Miami published a booklet which was a guide to historic sites in Coral Gables. There were two self-guided walking tours which included maps. They also included the entrances, plazas and fountains, the 7 villages, and other points of interest. The following is part eight from that booklet.

A Residential Walking Tour
This self-guided tour may be completed by walking to twelve locations given in the Residential Key. We cover the first six points of interest in this installment.

Residential Walking tour map

Coral Gables House GRASSO HOUSE
1216 Asturia – H. George Finkk – 1924

This early bungalow residence is a splendid example fo the talent and thought expended in designing even the smallest of homes. The diversity played out within the Mediterranean theme in buildings of all sizes is indeed the enchantment of Coral Gables.

GRANADA GOLF COURSE

The Granada Golf Course, originally the Coral Gables Golf and Country Club, opened in 1923. Much of the Granada Golf Course lies lower than the surrounding land and was originally a swampy glade: another example, like Venetian Pool, of how George Merrick could turm a liability into an asset. During the heyday of early Coral Gables, it was used as an airstrip to bring investors into the area. From here, also, you were given a free airplane ride it you bought a lot. Open to the public, the Granada is one of three golf courses in Coral Gables.

COUNTRY CLUB OF CORAL GABLES
997 North Greenway Drive – 1924

Across the golf course, the Country Club of Coral Gables was the center of social life in Coral Gables during the 1920s and 30s. The club, built by George Merrick, featured big band entertainment by Paul Whiteman and Jan Garber, Most of the original coral rock portion was destroyed by fire in 1983. Architect David Harum designed the new 1984 section.

Greeley House TAYLOR HOUSE
1006 South Greenway Drive – Walter de Garmo – 1922

Built for speculation, this residence was one of the first homes on the golf course. The house, restored and enlarged in 1976, is an outstanding example of harmoniously blending the old with the new. Early Coral Gables' promotional brochures and advertisements often featured this home.

Doc Dammers' House MERRICK HOUSE
832 South Greenway Drive – H. George Fink – 1924

This house was the third Coral Gables home of George Merrick. It is the only house located on the block and was erected at the site of the Coral Gables Plantation's citrus packing plant. The home is noted for its irregular form, which is enhanced with textured stucco and exposed coral rock. It has arched openings, which are in slender and squat proportions. A wall encloses both the house and servants quarters, which is now a garage apartment. Many of the original features of the home have been maintained.

Casa Azul MAXWELL HOUSE
840 Coral Way – H. George Fink – 1924

The classical elements and proportions of this residence set it apart from nost other Coral Gables homes built at the time. The elaborate central doorway is surrounded by Corinthian columns, a swan's neck pediment and cartouches, and crowned by a pair of decorative urns.

Brothers John and Coulton Skinner were the architects of this house. This successful and respected team designed many fine homes in Coral Gables and Miami.

In the next newsletter #21 we will feature entrances, plazas and fountains. That will be part nine.

Tony Bennett, Duets II "TONY BENNETT: DUETS II"

Biography Less than ten months before he would celebrate his 85th birthday, Tony Bennett stood on the field of AT&T Park in San Francisco during the 7th inning of the first game of the 2010 World Series between the Giants and Texas Rangers (San Francisco would go on to win the championship in 5 games). This was his second time “at bat” during the game. Earlier he’d dazzled the home team crowd with his a cappella performance of “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” but this moment, with just a microphone in hand and his amazing and powerful voice, he sang “God Bless American, first heard on Kate Smith’s popular radio program on the eve of Armistice Day, 1938. On that historic November 10th, twenty years after the signing of the Armistice that brought World War I to an end and three years before Pearl Harbor was attacked, Irving Berlin’s love song for his adopted country -- a song filled not with the bombast of some anthems, but a song infused with humility and gratitude -- touched millions of Americans.
